I use a Sony MiniDisk player. At $99 it's in the same price range as the
flash-memory-based players, but it uses minature recordable optical disks
that will hold up to 5 hours of music each -- and you can always buy more
disks. Best part is it plays 40 to 50 hours on one AA battery, a lot more
than most MP3 players.
Our troop's rule on campouts is no electronics, but I relax that for
Philmont -- they can use them on the way to and from the ranch and in their
tents at base camp.
