As Wally's note infers, there is a reason burros have nicknames that
coorespond to human anatomy.

It is an experience, as all of Philmont is, and each person takes away
his own high points .. at the end of the day though, as Wally said, it
is the journey and not the destination. So if the prospect of Burro
Packing has your guys fired up, its a good thing but it probably won't
be the thing that makes them want to go back to Philmont ...

That said, I think I preferred burro racing to burro packing.

        The burro packing debate will continue because there are so many
pros and cons!!

        First of all, all program at Philmont is a diversion because the
real program is the scenery.

        Having said that, there are my answers to your questions:

        * Do we get to put our full pack on the burro and just
walk with them?

        NO. Just crew gear. NO PACKS

        * What do we need to do to take care of the burros and how
much time will it take?

        Just food that the burro carries. The crew needs to feed them
and make sure they have water. They walk slowly or sometimes decide
that they need a break. It is a frustrating experience but with
anything, it will be an experience that will be long remembered.

        * With the Leave No Trace principles, do we need to
pick-up after the burros?

        NO.

        Having done the burros once, my crews always choose to see the
demo from the wrangler on to pack burros, but then decide not to take
the burros. The biggest con with the burros is that you can not hike
over Wilson Mesa with the burros. The biggest pro is that it is
something that they will probably never do again and it quite an
experience.

        The boys in our crew are working on their top 5 trek choices for
our June 2005 trek. There's a definite interest in Burro Packing, but
I'm not sure that the brief summary from our 2002 Guidebook to Adventure
gave them a clear picture of what this program feature entails. So, I'd
be interested in some details from those of you who have experienced a
trek with burro packing. Some questions that came up were:

        * Do we get to put our full pack on the burro and just
walk with them?
        * What do we need to do to take care of the burros and how
much time will it take?
        * With the Leave No Trace principles, do we need to
pick-up after the burros?

        Also, your overall impression of how this did or did not enhance
your Philmont experience would be very helpful.
