"3. Garden of the Gods Park near Colorado Springs) is a beautiful and scenic
park; a good place for a drive thru loop, with some stops for either hikes
or climbing around on the beautiful and large boulders which make up the
landscape."

Great spot, worth a stop, but a free permit is required for rock climbing
... and these are big boulders ...

Photos at www.troop6bsa.org photo album , scroll down to Philmont 2004, then
select Mr Harrison's photos .. #35-45 are our guys on the rocks at GOG right
before we were told what we were doing was illegal. So we stopped.

Garden of the Gods has a great website at
http://www.gardenofgods.com/default.asp that includes their rules -

"Rock Climbers must first register at the Garden of the Gods Visitor &
Nature Center. Technical climbing is permitted on established routes, in
groups of two or more. Proper climbing equipment is mandatory and the use of
eco-chalk is recommended. All other climbing or rock scrambling in Garden of
the Gods Park is illegal."

Subject: RE: [Philmont]: pre-philmont activities

I am helping set up some activities to do in and around Colorado Springs
before my crew arrives at Philmont. We have most of the three days locked
up, but there is some time on the second day that is open. I have been
trying to find a rock climbing place. I have heard of one called Camp
Quest, but I can't find it online. Has anyone been there, and if so, can
you tell me 1) where it is in relation to Colorado Springs?, and 2) how much
does it cost to do? Our other activities are: doing the whole Arkansas
River, climbing Pikes Peak, and the Koshare Indian Kiva.

Thanks,

Pete Johnson

Answer:

Three Free Places, in or near Colorado Springs, and can be done in about 1.5
hours each, not including travel time. I have taken crews to these places
and they have enjoyed the experience. All three places are good for Kodak
moments.

1. U.S. Olympic Training Center. They require a reservation for a group of
10 or more, and give tours every hour. The tour includes a video, and then
a tour of part of the facility. There's a good place outside for a Kodak
moment with the big 5 intertwined Olympic Rings - the rings are open and the
guys can have their faces showing thru the rings.

2. US Air Force Academy is also a good place for a short visit, if it is
open to the public. The main tourist attraction is their architecturally
awesome Chapel. Beware, if the Homeland Security threat level goes up for
any reason, they stop letting visitors in. If you can get in, there's a
short video available at the visitor center. Then you can view the parade
grounds, and the Chapel (unless there's a wedding or some other ceremony
going on).

3. Garden of the Gods Park near Colorado Springs) is a beautiful and scenic
park; a good place for a drive thru loop, with some stops for either hikes
or climbing around on the beautiful and large boulders which make up the
landscape.
