You really need to leave basecamp with you full complement of batteries, the
back country trading posts are hit or miss.
wrt flashlight, one set, in the device should suffice ... a LED based lamp
being an excellent choice for a variety of reasons ... weight, size,
brightness ...
wrt camera, know your device. I took about 500 digital photos and shot
about an hour of video on my hybrid camera ... I carried three batteries
with about 1200 minutes of battery power, and used about half of that.
wrt GPS, I carried mine and used it sparingly ... not so much for navigation
per se but for altitude checks (are we there yet) it proved very much a
luxury item with little usefulness, but we were in the south and central
with plenty of visual clues ... the Valle might prove a little tricky. I
carried two sets, which cover about two days of use. Don't know if I'd take
the GPS next time around.
Charging opportunities are, effectively, non-existent ... even in base camp.
I used our van and a car charger for the camera batteries.
At Jamboree one of our ASMs brought along a solar charger ... worked great
... I've heard of folks hanging these on their packs, or spreading them out
during program ... pricey though ... I can get more specific info on this
item if you desire - contact me off list.

I plan to bring a few items to Philmont that will likely require batteries
(flashlight, camera, GPS).
I don't want to carry an extra supply of batteries. What is the
availability of batteries in the backcountry?
