Having made the Philmont Trek, I am not at all convinced that a GPS unit is
even necessary. It gets close to an over kill situation for me.
While it's a cool tool, nice to have and all that; there have been many
crews who have successfully made the Philmont Trek with just good map and compass
skills.
Now that could set off a whole new discussion for this list.
 
In my previous post, I used flashlights as a generic term for an
illumination device. LED devices, headlamps or flashlights, are the way to go for
minimal battery/power consumption. Under normal usage a fresh set of batteries
should be more than adequate for the entire trek.
