RE: [Philmont]: Its Batteries now ...GPS

I've carried a GPS on both of my treks, (24 & 9) not for navigation but for
the tracks. I would turn the GPS on when starting out each day then place
it in the top of my pack. Then when we arrive at the next camp I would take
it out, save the days track and then turn it off. When I got home I
downloaded to my computer and then with the camp locations that were added I
would print out a custom map for each of the participants with our tracks
highlighted and camps marked. Two of us have farmed these maps with
pictures in a 24 X 36 frame for display. I have used the Garmin software
and also DeLorme Topo USA 5.0 for the maps. You can do 3D maps with the
DeLorme software. It is interesting to move your cursor over the profile
and check on the map while see the details (lat, lon, elevation, dist, etc.
Below is the data from the last day of trek 24 from Clark's fork to base
camp. If anyone would like more information feel free to contact me
offline.

Having made the Philmont Trek, I am not at all convinced that a GPS unit is
even necessary. It gets close to an over kill situation for me.

While it's a cool tool, nice to have and all that; there have been many
crews who have successfully made the Philmont Trek with just good map and
compass skills.

Now that could set off a whole new discussion for this list.

In my previous post, I used flashlights as a generic term for an
illumination device. LED devices, headlamps or flashlights, are the way to
go for minimal battery/power consumption. Under normal usage a fresh set of
batteries should be more than adequate for the entire trek.
