A new set of batteries should be plenty for a flashlight for an entire trek.
I think most of my summers as a Ranger I used one set of batteries, maybe
two sets each summer. When its dark you sleep, or you go to night program at
a camp. There's not much other time a flashlight needs to be used.
I think that the one flashlight per tent thing got axed in 2002 during the
fires (which may repeat themselves with the current lack of moisture this
winter). It may save some weight, but every camper needs to be able to see
if there is a night evacuation. That was the word from on high that summer.
I can't argue with it.
I used a headlamp for my flashlight. I also used rechargeable batteries. My
experiences were that rechargeables lasted longer in cold weather, although
it may have just been my imagination ;) I'm sure someone on the list can
explain the chemical reactions that may make this so if that is needed.
GPS is a luxury. The only time I ever used a GPS on Philmont was when I was
gathering data for the new sectional maps. I think I may have used one on an
off ranch SaR. There's lots of land marks, trail signs, trails, and 3000+
other people in the backcountry if you need to find where you are.
I'm not opposed to luxuries, just don't take too many. Backpacking is about
the simple life. I like my crazy creek and my water filter. Just don't let
the gadgets distract you from the journey.
