So we agree that at Philmont a GPS is a recreational tool
for making your trip more fun. Like a crazy creek chair, a
jetboil for coffee (only), a book, a journal or maybe even
a camera.
To make my trip more fun, I just bought a Garmin 60cx. I
looked on the internet for topo's of Philmont ready for
loading into the Garmin but had no luck. Therefore I
followed the steps on
http://home.cinci.rr.com/creek/garmin.htm to make my own.
If you would like a copy of the final files, drop me an
email and I'll send them to you.
Disclaimer: This map is being provided as a recreational
tool and since we agree a compass and a map are all that
is required for a safe trek at Philmont, please don't rely
on these maps for navigation. All of the raw data came
from the USGS website. It was 'cooked' using free tools.
I'm going to enjoy seeing just how good a job I did on
them this summer. If you havequestions about the process,
just ask.
PS. I decided to replace my old Garmin III because it
sucks batteries like a pig. That means weight on the
trail. I'll skip the crazy chair. My son and I will select
books we both like to be able to share. I'll skip camp
shoes. I don't drink coffee but I'd love to try a jetboil
anyway!
