Re: [Philmont]: Advisor Age

I just went through this again with one of our adult leaders after verifying it with Fran (aka: she that knows everything about Philmont). Your boys can be youths until they turn 21, regardless of Troop or Crew status (however they must be registered as something (scout, scouter, crew member)).

Optionally, you can identify one as an Advisor, just as long as they are not the LEAD Advisor, if you wish. You can only have 4 Advisors, regardless of age. You must have a lead Advisor who is over 21. If you, for example, came with 3 advisors and some emergency required that 2 of them escort a scout out of the back country, you could then designate you 18 year old as an advisor (again, so long as a 21 or older advisor is the lead). This is very beneficial because it does not detract from you advisor limit unless you need it to.

BSA would require, assuming your 18 year old is from a troop, that he have a Youth Protection Cert once he becomes an adult. But that has nothing to do with Philmont.
