Re: [Philmont]: Mt Phillips and cell phones

We were there this year, while the climb up Phillips from Clear Creek was a bit tough, it wasn't as bad as it looked when we started. The real issue for us was the fact that our trek took us from Clear Creek, across Phillips to Cypher's Mine in one segment, while those coming the other direction were stopping overnight on the way. It made for a long hike, with little time to stop and enjoy the snow! By the way, on the cell phone issue, we did stop on top and let everyone call home (it was Father's Day) and surprise their dads. Nothing like getting a phone call on Father's Day from 11,000 feet.

It made the negligble (less than 4 ounces) weight of the cell phone more than worth it.

I think the guys in our 2003 crew would agree with you. They didn't
find the hike up Mt. Phillips from Clear Creek to be as difficult as
expected, but it was definitely the highlight of the trip. It was
surreal. The forest fires were still burning and we were above the
smoke, watching water-carrying helicopters flying below us, blades
shining in the sun. Camped on top of Phillips and watched a large
cinnamon colored bear walk through camp in the morning.
