We did trek 6 last year (2005-731-R1), and our ranger took us over to
Harlan to do Burro Racing the first night. The scouts were grumbling on
the way over... "why do we have to hike over there for dumb burro racing?".
As soon as the field was in sight we could see that the races had
already started. The scouts saw what was going on, and started running
to go join in. The staff held another 3 or 4 races before they ended
things, and our scouts had a blast. They considered it one of the
highlights of the trek. I still remember our fastest scout leading the
burro at a full run. This scout was slightly under the weight limit for
his height, and at the end of the race the burro did not stop, but
dragged the scout, feet dug in kicking up dust, another 100 yards
towards the corral.
I highly recommend it... there are times when you have to gently
overrule the "boy led troop" thing. Again, your ranger may or may not be
able to include burro racing with the training.
The next day we hiked into Harlan with backpacks, and did shotgun shell
reloading and skeet shooting. Not as fun as burro racing.
