Margo--
I would suggest that you call the Philmont Training Center and talk to
someone there who is knowledgeable about the family programs. This would
probably set your mind at ease. I am an elementary school music teacher,
and I have taught many students with Asbergers and other "special" issues.
I am also a Philmont staff member, and back in the 80's I was a program
manager at the Training Center. The Training Center (PTC) accomodates many
special needs children and adults all summer. They should be able to accept
your boys without much trouble. That being said, the group leaders are
young and probably not very experienced with things like this. So, be
prepared to explain your boys' needs. All in all, it could be a wonderful
experience for them.

Subject: [Philmont]: Philmont with Special Needs?
----Forwarded Message(s)----
I just got an envelope from Philmont inviting me to attend this summer-I
guess someone nominated me at council.
It sounds like fun and my two boys, 12 and 8, even sound like they're
interested (they want the horse riding). BUT, they both have Aspergers
Syndrome (a form of high-functioning autism). The 8yo can function fairly
well in most situations, although he is noticeably less mature than other
boys his age. The 12yo I think would have a hard time and may need more
individualized assistance (like an aide) and probably will need to take
breaks from the activities at times when he is overwhelmed.
Does anyone know, before I call and ask, if Philmont can and/or will
accommodate these special needs boys of mine?
I need to find that out, and I need to figure out how much it would cost to
get down there from Portland, OR, before we can decide whether to go.
