RE Batteries
My humble opinion on cameras , ergo batteries:
1. Use 1 camera for the crew. Bring spare memory cards for it.
2. Get the high-speed-low drag batteries for digital devices
3. Test the camera you'll be taking by using it on prep hikes. Figure out how fast you use batteries.
Factor in that you'll be taking more pictures at Philmont.
4. Buy enough batteries to last 11 days at peak consumption rates.
5. Spread the batteries among the crew.
In 2004, our worst case scenario was we use 2 AAs per day so each guy carried two "For the Camera Only" batteries. No one carried too many, and we never ran out.
RE JetBoils
I had a delightful E-discussion with a senior representative of the company that makes JetBoils. He was both glad to know his product was being discussed by as august a body as this forum, representing thousands of high-adventure youngsters and he was a supporter of the BSA, meaning willing to extend a discount to BSA groups who purchase their products.
If anyone is interested in obtaining JetBoil products at discounted prices, direct from the manufacturer, send me a PM at the address below and I'll send out the form.
BTW, in April JetBoil will be introducing a new larger-pot version of their 4-cup unit currently on the market. Might make a difference in Phil-crews thinking about taking the JetBoils.

My first two treks I used a point and shoot 35. Battery life of
digitals at that time and cost for a high mega pixel camera were the
main reasons I stayed with film. Then, in 2004 I made a switch to
digital for a BWCA trip, a Pentax Optio 555, 5x digital zoom, 5 mega
pixels. When selecting the camera, I looked for one with a number if
features important to me including one that would run on AAs. Well, the
camera I decided on met all of my criteria except it uses proprietary
batteries. For Philmont last year I carried three batteries, took about
700 shots and the last battery died after the closing campfire. I knew
I had plenty of battery life so I did not go to extreme measures to
conserve power.

Dorman asked what camera is best. I don't think there is an answer to
this. You find a camera that you are comfortable with and has the
features you want. You can find a number of sites on the web that have
evaluations of different models. I spent a good amount of time
researching on the web before I bought my Pentax. And I am glad that I
did because I discovered that a camera I almost bought at our local Wolf
Camera had been replaced with a new version after being on the market
for less than 6 months due to several problems with the camera. I like
the camera I have for backpacking as it uses SD chips, has decent
battery life, and is compact. I carried three 512 SD chips at Philmont
and I always shoot on the highest quality as I never know when I might
take on that I want to enlarge. =20

One thing I have learned about the proprietary batteries is that some of
the aftermarket ones are not very good. Both of the two Pentax branded
batteries I have last about twice as long as an unbranded one that I
bought because it was less expensive. Did I hear someone say you get
what you pay for?

One of the best scenic shots I made was from the campsite that is uphill
from the staff cabin at Head of Dean. From there, you have a great view
of Baldy. I now have that one enlarged to 20x24 and hanging on the wall
at my office.

secured spots through our council contingent, we will be passing on this

I was the advisor on Jim's trek with the older digital, a Fuji FinePix 2650
2.0 mega pixel. A relatively inexpensive camera, yet I think it takes great
shots, and some video capability as well (no sound). I liked it because I
didn't have to worry about the remorse of damaging or losing an expensive
piece of equipment on the trail, it is pretty rugged, and it uses AA
batteries. You can probably find one for $50 on eBay. I took over 300
shots on a single set of lithium batteries, although I carried a spare set.
If you want to compare the quality a $50 camera to Jim's $500 camera (my
guess at the cost, but Jim likes his toys), you can see both our pics on the
website below (Mr. Thompson's photos and Mr. Simonis' photos).

On our 2004 trek the three advisors each took a different approach ... one
had a 35mm, one an older digital, and one a new digital video/still hybrid.
All performed well, the most important aspect being the user's familiarity
with the device. If you are considering a new purchase, consider the
camera's life after Philmont (yes, there is life after Philmont, but it
pales by comparison). Your going to want compact, light weight and some
degree of ruggeness water resistance, although you will certainly want a
padded and water proof bag (see www.m-rock.com ). What ever you choose,
think about how you will use the camera for the long haul, and get enough
experience with it to understand its features and quirks, finally know its
battery consumption and storage needs so you can have an adequate supply of
both.
Many will suggest a camera that uses AAs, in general I'd concur and suggest
investing in rechargables... you can recharge in base camp (the advisor's
lounge is one spot) so you hit the trail with a full load. As i said
previously, battery type is but one consideration, make sure you choose the
right camera for you with the features you want.
I was the guy with the video/still hybrid which took proprietary batteries
but it allowed me to record that eagle court of honor on the tooth the
morning of our last day ... a download friendly (read dumbed down quality
wise) lives on the troop website, url below. At the end of the day remember
that you will capture memories for the ages, I took lots of photos as a kid,
the only ones I still have are from Philmont & my Eagle Project. The video
shot on the tooth that morning in 2004 was shown at the younger brother's
Eagle COH late last year and is an emotional experience for those that were
there, and even for those that were not .... That's one kid that will
remember exactly where he got his eagle.

the only exceptions that come to mind. Even there I would not depend on
finding and available outlet. I plan to carry enough batteries for more
shots than I expect to take.
For what it's worth, on past treks I've averaged about 25 photos a day with
a film camera. I figure it'll probably be more with the digital.

I took a Nikon CoolPix 5200 last year (2005). I was looking for an extra battery (proprietary EN-EL5), and I found a combo pack - extra battery with carrying case. I found that the two batteries were enough. I started out using the LCD display, but when the first battery gave out on day 6, I shut off the LCD to ensure the second battery would last until home. I carried a single 1GB memory card (SD), and I wound up taking around 600 pictures at 5M setting (2592x1944). At home I culled the 600 down to about 225 pretty good shots. I like the picture quality, and it has a panoramic assist mode. The size is nice, it fits nicely in the cargo pockets of your hiking shorts, and the carrying case goes nicely on a belt. I hate having to dig around in a pack to take a picture. I'll try to post representative, uncompressed and unshrunk images over the next day or so for comparative purposes. Joe's more subtle point is worth amplifying - any electronics you take might not survive the trip ... take measures to protect them.
