Re: [Philmont]: Propane Stoves

We had an excellent experience in 2005 with Coleman Exponent Xpert
stoves. There was a plentiful supply of cartridges available at
Phillips Junction, although we used substantially less fuel than we'd
anticipated and did not need to purchase any on the trail. One reason
these work well for us is that they are our everyday stoves which we
use for everything - the boys all are extremely comfortable with them.
They've proven quite reliable in nearly 3 years of month-to-month
troop heavy usage - indeed, we've yet to break out the repair kit.

However, these are propane/butane mix stoves, not propane stoves that
use the standard Coleman green canisters. If that's what you are
referring to, then I'd avoid taking that to Philmont. Powermax
canisters are thin and light - an empty one doesn't weigh much more
than an empty coke can, but the empty green ones are still quite
heavy. Also, it makes no sense to use two different fuel systems and
stove types - you really don't want to have to retrain midstream when
you run out of one type and switch, and you certainly don't want to
carry redundant fuel supplies. I think you should consider rounding up
another white gas stove to match what you have. If you shop sales you
should be able to get a reasonable price.
