Jim's point about LNT and canisters is well taken. That is why I switched
to liquid fuel several years ago for most applications

The Propane/butane mixes or butane only stoves were made for high altitude.
(Besides it is hard to carry wood to the South Col on Everest.)

However, this stoves that use a butane mix are not propane stoves. Propane
are more efficient in some tests. The propane canister is much heavier and
not refillable by the industry standards, but you can buy a connector to
fill the canisters. There is a difference between the connector threads so
in most cases, not all, butane is not interchangeable with propane stoves.

I use propane on river trips, works well, efficient and refillable in the 25
pound tanks. I carry the smaller tanks for back up, lanterns and hot showers
(decadent!). I use butane mountain climbing above 20,000'. They both have
their plusses and minuses. However even Coleman, the largest manufacturer of
propane stoves does not advertise propane for more than car camping, mainly
because of the weight.

Please clarify which of these you are talking about, propane or butane/mixes
because of the differences.

On another note, all butane mixes are non-refillable and are not really
recyclable. As such, they do not meet LNT or recycle/reuse environmental
practices.

We took propane/butane stoves (Gaz 270, as I recall), and they worked just
fine at altitude and in cold. We used less than 4 canisters of fuel for our
9 member crew. I don't know what those guys were cooking, but they were
over-prepared. One fuel spill by a scout onto the scout's pack convinced me
that that propane/butane was the way to go.

single-burner propane stoves. I'm sure they're not prohibited, but I
certainly wouldn't recommend them given the better options that are
available. Each crew member carried a full propane canister with them (that
seems like a lot of weight and bulk to me) and it seemed to work fine for
them - I'm not sure if altitude would affect their operation or not.<
