One point shown in Joe's post, that I haven't seen mentioned: white gas,
being a liquid, can be transferred between containers. You can top off a
stove tank before starting to cook and don't have to worry about switching
canisters half way through. Or you can distribute one bottle of fuel among
several stoves and have them cooking simultaneously. Combined with the fact
white gas is widely used and widely available, if you run short you may be
able to borrow (in any amount) from another crew; likewise you can lend any
amount or give away whatever you have left at the end of your trek. You
don't have this type of flexibility with a canister.
