I love gadgets, Joe outed me earlier, and the Jetboil is one neat gadget.
But I personally don't think its the right tool for the job at the ranch. I
think its probably perfect for hiking pairs, or situations where weight
isn't as great a concern and a dedicated stove for hot drinks morning &
night is affordable.
Your Philmont Ranger will coach you to cook as a crew, over one stove,
probably using one pot. There are a couple of reasons for this but the
point is that cooking for 12 is more efficent than cooking for 2 or cooking
for 2 six times. In the end I think its all about division of
responsibility - a couple of people cook, a couple deal with the bear bags,
a couple deal with the tarp, others get the tents up, a couple get water, a
couple to clean up, all with group efficency being the goal. In '04 we
thought we would need two or three stoves to cook for the crew, even using
just two cooks ... when we hit the trail we used one stove and carried a
second purely as a backup ... one whisperlite with one 8 qt pot did the job
for 12. Add to that a backup stove and three 11oz fuel bottles and
consider weight, bulk and cost ....
That said, this is just an opinion, if a jetboil (or a couple) works for
your crew, go for it, but consider the concept of a crew ... it isn't six
pair, its a single interdependent group.
