Don,
30 is long-famous for being just about the best itenerary at Philmont. You can see more of Philmont and climb almost every mountain. If you know what you're doing, you can even drop into the South Country and do a 2nd black powder shoot at Black Mountain Camp on the way out. 30 requires special people to pull it off and still have fun. Otherwise, it can become a death march. It's lots of hiking and lots of pass-thrus for program; but if your guys will get on the trail by 6:30, you can do everything. It's a whirlwind tour of the entire place that most don't get to see. I've had the "joy" of doing it 3 times, the first two when it used to be numbered 21 and 26. There's only one problem. It has burros from Ponil. In the past we've always been able to decline that offer and instead of walking a dull trail up to Pueblano from Ponil, we'd sidetrack up to beautiful Wilson Mesa and enjoy the views of Baldy and the Valle Vidal before going down into Pueblano. These days, however, I understand the burros are mandatory. If you're willing to tolerate going slow for those two days until you can drop them at Miranda, 30's a great choice.
