An older wrangler at Ponil told us that the limit was for the safety of
the rider. They were concerned about big guys falling and getting hurt.
He said they had horses that could carry more than 200 pounds.

Likely an arbitrary position, but probably necessary to save wear and
tear
on the animals ... I suspect being a Horse or Burro at Philmont ain't
the
best gig going.

This detail is included in the Cavalcade description on the Philmont
Website
but also applies to Horse Rides at Beaubien, Clarks Fork or Ponil.
