RE: [Philmont]: 30 or 35

I heartily second everything Jerry said about 30. Also done it 3 or
4 times - a consistent favorite for the advanced hikers. Hopefully
it will be continued. Baldy, Phillips, Tooth, the Stomp at Cyphers,
the Super Black Death hike the last two days if you stay on the high
route, hike in to CHQ, just a few of the highlights not mentioned by
Jerry. Burros were not desired by my council contingent provisional
crew last summer when we did 30, but no choice. Made us late and
missed program at Pueblano. Made us late and missed program at
Miranda. Missed Wilson Mesa, of course. But, there's hope. I heard
that consideration was being given to moving burros off the more
"strenuous" treks, and/or making them optional for these advanced
ones. Read the fine print in the new 06 Treks book if you want 30
and don't want burros - was on page 12 under "Selecting your
Itinerary" in the 05 Treks book. I'm not bashing burros - they do
have some value if your crew wants that experience - just be aware of
your choices. (I hope this doesn't start another burro thread - this
is about Itinerary 30.)
