I choose not to eat red meat, although I do it to avoid health
problems, not because of any particular moral choice. Myself and one
other advisor took all our own food to Philmont (she's very sensitive
to sodium) in 2004. There's *no* way either of us could have eaten
the Philmont food - fatty meat sticks loaded with sodium daily.

Another advantage of this was that we could bring some extra stuff
for the boys if they had particular needs. One scout had a problem
with getting and absorbing enough calories. So, we put his power
gels in with our food, and he didn't have to carry the full 10 day
supply with him on the entire trek.

Philmont was fine with our food, and the boys had a little more to
eat themselves, with us out of the picture.

Lou
