[philmont] Vegetarians at Philmont

I'm lead to understand from previous postings that you can bring your own
food to Philmont, label it with your expedition number and it can be entered
into the logistical system at Philmont. There is no reduction in fee
for not using the Philfood if you choose to do this.

My wife and I have been through a hospital sponsored program to remediate
heart issues through diet using the Dean Ornish program. It is akin to
vegetarianism, although not identical to it. This diet remediated heart
disease in one participating individual to the extent that he was told by
his cardiologist that if he had followed this diet he would not have needed
stents and bypass surgery.

It is very clear to me that a good diet, which may vary from individual to
individual, is one key to a
successful Philmont experience, so if you bring your own food be sure that
you plan well for your nutrition to be able to deal with the high altitude
backpacking experience at Philmont.

The thread I would like to see is what culinary masterpieces have people
prepared on the trail at Philmont. Yes you can do it even with the basic
Philfood if you are clever about the recipes you work with. Several recipe
threads on Scouts-L that I've posted suggest you can eat very well in the
out of doors (try Bavarian mint coffee instead of plain coffee as one
example).

Create your own Philmont legend by preparing great meals that would pass
muster in a five star restaurant.

Post here or on Scouts-L the recipes which have worked well for you.

A happy Philmont food memory for me was eating sopapillas, which served warm
with a spread and honey were great eating. Our ranger showed us how to fix
them.
