Whatever hiking boot/shoe, camp shoe or socks you take to Philmont be
sure they are a comfortable fit for you and give you good support.
I remember how good it felt to take the hiking boots off after
a long trail at Philmont. Feet were hot but in good shape because of
the good fit of the boots and the socks.
The socks helped cushion the feet when the foot hit the ground. I
don't recall the brand of socks but they were thick rather than thin.
The only way to be sure the boots, camp shoe or socks are going to be
good for you is to wear them enough, preferably on shakedown hikes,
before going to Philmont.
One issue is that if the foot slips in the shoe you can develop
blister problems. You want a snug fit but not too tight so that the
foot is "gripped" by the shoe and sock and your feet are supported.
Socks which tend to "bunch up" can be a problem.
Your feet are going to get a lot of wear and tear at Philmont unless
the sock/shoe combination fits right. The only way to be sure you
have things right is to wear the shoes and socks a lot before leaving
to see how they will fit for you at Philmont.
I had some feet issues at Philmont but found changing socks frequently
solved them.
You can't take too much care of your feet at Philmont. There are
various foot powders and creams that may be useful to care for your
feet. Check these out before leaving for Philmont also.
As for a camp shoe, after hiking your feet are going to be hot and I'd
check a camp shoe out for its ability to breathe, in order to keep
your feet cool. Here also I would look for a snug fit and a good sole
to protect your feet.
