The hideous colors are the only reason I would probably own a pair, I looked at the website and I like the looks of the off-raod model and it comes in safety orange so I won't lose them!! I was also looking at a pair of Merrill amphibious shoes akin to the Keens (Merrill shoes seem to fit me perfectly) and I think they would be a good choice too. ----- Original Message ---- From: Julian Love <JL@JLove.net> To: philmont List Member <philmont@troop47.com> Sent: Friday, February 9, 2007 9:58:32 AM Subject: [philmont] Crocs shoes for Philmont. Have got agree with most of Pete’s comments. I am well aware of stepping on rocks with a flimsy sole - water shoes among them. But I will tell you, Crocs do have a rather substantial sole, thick enough to guard against most of the rocky stuff at Philmont. Main problem with them, as with any sandal/clog-type shoe, is the occasional rock/pebble that sneaks inside the shoe from the side. And yes, some of the Crocs colors are hideous. You gotta just get over that. That’s what makes them cool! Julian Love Charlotte, NC ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Pete Swiggum" <Peter.Swiggum@sbcglobal.net> Date: Fri, 9 Feb 2007 07:41:35 -0800 I would not suggest bringing camp shoes to Philmont that are too lightweight and flimsy (i.e. aqua sox, running shoes sans the cleats, etc.) Philmont is a rocky place. Walking around in aqua sox or the like are not much better than bare feet, in my opinion. To me, the Keens were the ultimate camp shoe. They weigh next to nothing and have a decent sole, protect one's toes from rocks and, most importantly, if you really HAD to wear them as an alternative to your hiking boots, you could do it. I wouldn't want to hike at Philmont wearing aqua sox for all the trail mix in New Mexico. I would put those hideous Crocs in the same category. Just my two cents, of course.
