Well, "back in the day" when all boots were stitched, you could
take your chances after looking at the condition of your boots.
With so many models coming glued, however, failure can be quick
and wholly without warning.
Two weeks before my trek in 2005, I had a boot come apart at
the sole. The glue had failed. With only two weeks to go, I
had to get a new pair and forego the usual break-in time to
wear them. So I got a really good pair that, as it turned out,
fit perfectly and gave me no problems at all. In fact, they
were better on my feet than my well-broken in boots that, until
that time, I had thought I was having no problem with.
I will note that the prep I was on when the boots failed was a
17 mile day hike to climb half-dome in Yosemite. I was only about
4 miles in when they blew out and I did not have any duct tape
with me (goes in my pack gear, but not my day hike gear, or rather
it used to). That was a LONG walk with a blown out boot. I did
get to the top of half-dome.
I shudder to think having that earlier pair fail on the trail at
Philmont. Though I do use sneakers as my spare shoes, and those
would have worked fine.
I did make a point of bringing the blown out pair with me to
Philmont. I have a really nice picture of my tossing them over
the sign, and of them hanging from the sign :-)
