[philmont] Croc's shoes for Philmont.

In 2002 I hiked Philmont without a pair of camp shoes. For the most
part it was fine. There were a few times in camp, however, when I just
wanted to get those hot boots off my feet. If you are trying to pack
as light as possible, don't take camp shoes. If you want an occasional
break from your boots, take Crocs or another ultralight shoe. If you
want a camp shoe to use for programs or walking outside of camp, take
sneakers, running shoes or something similar.

The idea of camp shoes being an emergency back-up to your boots is
similar to the discussion of water filters and Micro Pure. If you are
a big guy and carrying a little extra weight doesn't bother you - go
for it. However, when advising 14 to 17-year-old Scouts, think about
what will make their experience most enjoyable. My experience is that
lightening their load will make a huge difference in how much they
enjoy the trip.

The Wal-Mart water shoes I recommended are not water socks. They have
a sole and nylon upper with laces through a couple of eyelets. Don't
take water socks - they don't offer enough protection and they make
your feet sweat.
