[philmont] Philmont Camp Shoes

What a great idea!! I have a pair of older hiking boots that I retired from hiking in prior to my 1st Philmont excursion in 2003. I can't bring myself to pitch these boots as they do have a little sentimental value as I had several hundred miles of hiking on them prior to that trip and they have made good boots to work around camp in until they developed a crack in the sole that allows the dew to seep in to the bottom of my socks..... While I can't bear the thought of tossing my 'still in use' boots over the sign at the end of our trek this summer, I can surely see myself sending my old 'really need to be retired fully' boots over! Coop hit on the one thing that I had thought for quite a while but hadn't commented on (yet) and that is the need to allow your boots to cool and dry at the end of the day. This is something that I didn't do in 2003, my hiking boots are quite comfortable and usually at the end of a day, I would simply loosen the laces some and the change would be enough for my feet to rest and feel 'different' than when I was hiking (a lot of times, just getting the extra pack weight off made a difference in the feet.) I hadn't ever considered that I wasn't giving my boot enough time without my feet and the extra moisture that was in my boots each morning probably contributed to the blister problem that I had early in the trek that I suffered through the rest of the trek and for a couple weeks after returning (it took 3 weeks for the blisters on either side of the back of my heels to fully recover.) My boots were fully broken in, I had them for 2 years prior to Philmont and had quite a few
hiking miles as well as some general wear on them. The thing that we don't have in SE Iowa and on the trails and hikes we did leading up to Philmont is the amount of cross grade as there is on the trails from Cathedral Rock Camp to Upper Sawmill via Hidden Valley and Ute Gulch. I've never had blisters on my heels where I got them on the first major day of hiking on Itinerary 18. I had nylon cross trainers with me that are weight wise on the same order as running shoes but I never felt uncomfortable after taking off my pack and loosening my boots for the evening, I think next summer, I will try a different approach and take along something I can change into as soon as camp is set up to allow both my feet and my boots more of a break from each other. Great boot discussion.... getting a bit long now though. Kevin Mineart SM T214 W-Burlington, IA Council Contingent Crew Advisor 2007 ----- Original Message ---- From: Donald S. I was only about 4 miles in when they blew out and I did not have any duct tape with me (goes in my pack gear, but not my day hike gear, or rather it used to). That was a LONG walk with a blown out boot. I did get to the top of half-dome. <clip> Don Roberts Fullerton, CA 03, 05, 08 ------------------------------------------------------- Scouting E-mail Discussion Lists @ usscouts.org Listserv Commands at http://usscouts.org/lists/lc.asp ------------------------------------------------------- Send listserv commands to: listserv@troop47.com Send postings to: philmont@troop47.com List FAQ found at: http://usscouts.org/lists/faq.asp List Administrator: philmont_owner@troop47.com ------------------------------------------------------- To Unsubscribe send text email to: To: listserv@troop47.com Subject: unsubscribe Body: unsubscribe philmont@troop47.com ------------------------------------------------------- As you gather around this virtual campfire with fellow Scouts and Scouters, do your best to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. ------------------------------------------------------- ____________________________________________________________________________________ Need a quick answer?
