[philmont] Philmont Camp Shoes

 Pete Notes:
I knew a kid from another unit who had a failure on the
stitching on his boot sole on the first day. He had to hike
the rest of the way in his camp shoes. Luckily he had some
fairly good tennis shoes. His feet hurt, but he was able to
make it. If he had only had crocs or water sox, his trip
 would have ended early.

Not really. He might have been off the trail for a day and had to take
it easy for another, but I strongly suspect that Philmont would have him
back on the trail in new/loaner boots as soon as possible.

Regarding subject:

I love my Crocs. I wear them quite a bit of the time around town, on
campouts, at Philmont etc. On a couple of our shakedown hikes I wore
them (sans pack) over trails every bit as rocky as some at Philmont
without problems. If pushed, I would hike Tooth Ridge in them. I
wouldn't be the fastest packer in the group, and I would be cautious in
the *really* rocky places, but I think I would be okay. I particularly
liked my Crocs when taking a shower. I didn't have to concern myself if
they got wet, I didn't have to concern myself with the gunk on the
changing room floor, and I didn't have to change shoes to go back to
camp.

I have hiked (again with only a day pack) for several miles in Tevas. I
would have preferred my boots, but the trail had numerous stream
crossings and Tevas were what I had. No problems other than the
occasional pebble - but then I got pebbles in my boots when I wasn't
wearing gaiters so I guess it evens out.

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher
