My experience:
My first five treks I carried not-so-light athletic shoes for use around
camp. I also had a 25 year-old 35mm camera with a large 70-200mm zoom lens.
I was not as concerned about weight in my younger days.
When I saw all the Crocs on the feet of our Patriots' Path Council
contingent crews last spring at our Watchu Mountain Adventure, I looked at
them and bought a pair for my Autumn Adventure. They are a perfect camp
shoe - weigh nothing and have a substantial sole to protect your feet from
the rocks that transmit right through the thin flexible sole many
lightweight foot coverings have. Other products may have the same features,
but those are the two things you should be looking for.
While I know of hikers that did not take camp shoes, I would strongly advise
against that. Both your feet and your boots need a break from one another.
While I considered that I could hike in my athletic shoes if necessary, and
really don't want to think about carrying a pack on the trail in Crocs, in
my opinion the reality is that an emergency duct tape repair will get one
through any problem with blown out boots / glue separation / etc.
Your mileage may vary...

optical and 48x digital zoom...
