I do not believe you are ranting, but providing very sound information. But things that you would never expect do happen. In the fall of 2004, my son injured his ankle during a football game. After much therapy, the doctor said he was fit to go with the crew to Philmont in 2005. He took and wore a neoprene ankle brace just as a precaution. At night he would leave the ankle wrap on his boots under the dining fly. One morning about half way through the trek, he got up and the brace was gone. The crew looked everywhere in and around camp. After talking with the staff, the only thing we could come up with was some animal liked the salty brace and ran off with it. We were just glad it wasn't someone’s boot. The unexpected is why I take a good lightweight pair of camp shoes that can get me through the trek if they have to.
