[philmont] Philmont Camp Shoes -- bells or some other noise maker at night?

Concerning disappearing items:

On one trek in the mid-90's, we caught a mini-bear dragging one of our
advisor's socks away. Presumably to make a fabulous nest out of. Of
note, he (she?) was more interested in the sock than the nearby food
packets.

Not at Philmont but in PA and VA, I have witnessed deer licking boots
and licking and chewing backpack straps and back-padding. In these
cases, clearly for the salt. [I agree that food spills would be another
cause for this behavior.]

Remember that an animal doesn't have to drag an item very far in order
for it to be "lost". In some camps, 30 or 40 feet away might as well be
on Neptune as far as your chances to see it.

Finally, and on a sadder note, throwing a boot away can be an act of
self-sabotage for the Scout who wants to go home, or a malicious act by
a Scout who is trying to ruin someone else's trek. Such things do
happen....

My semi-educated guess is that the 20 boots per year issue is due to a
combination of the above issues.
