[philmont] Photo Gear at Philmont

In 2002, one of our youth crew members carried a video camera with all of
the needed accessories (about 10 pounds of gear total). He shot a total of
5 minutes of video (he was too busy enjoying the experience to film it). On
the other hand, in 2005, 3 adults and 3 youth in a crew of 10 took a total
of 3100 stills (incredibly few duplicate shots).

I'd love to have a video camera on our 2008 trip, but you almost have to
assign one advisor to be a full-time cameraman so everyone else can
participate fully in the experience.

I carry a Canon A610 IS (new present to myself last Christmas) with a 4 gig
SD card and lithium Energizer batteries. I carry this setup in a LowePro
camera pouch customized to attach to my backpack shoulder straps for easy
reach. I use a plastic cover similar to a shower cap to cover the camera
pouch in light showers, and store the camera pouch in the pack when it
decides to go ahead and rain. Three sets of AA lithium batteries is enough
to take more pictures that I could ever take on a Philmont trek.

Subject: [philmont] Photo Gear at Philmont

On Sat, 10 Feb 2007 08:28:34 -0500, "Alan and/or Brenda Thomson"
<abthomson@comcast.net> jammed all night, and by sunrise was heard saying:

> P.S. Also traded in the trusty Pentax K-1000 for a Canon PS-2 with a 12x
> optical and 48x digital zoom...

My first trip (with my son Sean, who just made Eagle last month) is
coming up this July, and I'm planning on packing some photo/video gear.
After the discussion on camp shoes (very useful, thanks) I figured you
all may have a bunch of photo experiences to pass along.

My current leaning is to bring my camcorder only, a Sony HVR-A1, with
batteries, tapes, and a good sized memory card for stills. I have an
excellent Manfroto monopod that also makes a comfortable walking stick,
and can fold up and easily tie to my pack if I don't need it. Obviously,
I'll need provisions for rain (NOT planning to bring the snorkling
enclosure, that seems like needless weight).
