[philmont] Photo Gear at Philmont

We had compiled a Photo CD for our 2002 and 2004 adventures. In 2002, a
majority of the photos were created from film, where the 2004 photos were
all digital. The big issue is getting everyones photos in one place to
filter, arrange by day, edit, resize, etc. In 2004 I had an older laptop
computer that I left in the base lockers and was able to get almost
everyones memory cards on the plane ride home to transfer to the hard drive.
Net result, both CD's had over 800 photos. 2002 took about 4 months to
assemble the photos and 2004 took 3 weeks. The CD's allowed the scouts and
parents to select which images they wanted to print out using a home printer
or their local photo processing center.

I remember reading on this list that everyones cameras should have the
electronic dates & times in sync, as it would make assembling the photos
easier (I need to remember this for our 2008 trip)

The slide shows that we had afterward were a hit as well, especially with
actual trail food on the refreshment table.

I also used a few 2002 "stock" photos in the 2004 CD, as it helped with the
storyline... Typical stock photos included a view of tent city from TOT,
sunrise over tent city, signage, etc

I have also used 2002 and 2004 photos to make comparisons between the
different years for our 2008 kickoff meeting. There was one staff camp we
stayed at in 2004 I didn't recognize until I was working on the CD and
realized that we had passed though there in 2002. Side by side photos
showing brown vegitation for 2002 was sharply contrasted by the lush green
look in 2004. I actually had a couple of photos that were taken from almost
the same spot... Looking at father/son photos were interesting as well -
from the typical "look how much Johnny has grown" to the comparison of
cleanliness in 2002 (drought year) vs 2004...

Regards,

Tom Fitzpatrick

It will depend on how important photos are and the quality of those
photographs. Would a "stock" photo of Baldy work for a scrapbook, or does it
have to be one that you took? For me, I'll mix in stock with personal and be
very happy. The other decision to make is have one or two designated
photographers or have everyone bring cameras. I've seen Crews were ten or
twelve guys are all taking turns taking the exact same photo from the exact
same spot. Try to have a plan. Perhaps a photographer of the day would work
for some Crews. Plan on compiling everyone's photos to a CD. Even if you are
shooting film, have a CD made as well and share.
