Like all gear there are at least four axes to consider:
Cost. Not only how much in absolute terms, but how much relative to
the budget you have for all of the gear you need to buy now.
Durability. Gear I buy for me is often very different than gear I
recommend for boys, because I take care of my gear very differently
than most boys. As part of this calculation, how catastrophic is the
failure in the field and how repairable is the failure likely to be?
Length of service. Is this gear for a once in a lifetime trip or
something you will use for years? Notice that boots for boys almost
always fall into the once in a lifetime category even if they will
backpack for the rest of their life.
Weight. How much difference does an ounce make to your load and
given the other factors is this the best place to save it. My son is
a 6' varsity athlete. An ounce doesn't mean much to him. I'm a
FOG. An ounce means a lot.
This is why different choices are best for different people.
For me, I'm taking the Micropore Rainsuit to DoubleH this summer.

My son will take a nylon rainsuit.
