Wow!! That one statement really made me think..... My son was a nearly 15 YO, 5-10 JV athlete when we went in 2003, now he's a 6-1 college basketball player (at a small, Iowa NAIA school) He out-hiked/out-carried us all in '03, he's going to be impossible this time around!!
While, like you say, an ounce doesn't mean much to them, my son carried extra meals for those that couldn't as well as a crew "emergency" 3-liter platypus in '03, it does add up and the extra weight that usually falls on the more athletic will max out sooner if they aren't as weight concious as the rest. In '03, we had several 'under weight' guys in our crew of 9 so those of greater heft ended up carrying more. Some importance still needs to be placed on being weight concious, even for those that that won't feel their own gear.

Weight. How much difference does an ounce make to your load and
given the other factors is this the best place to save it. My son is
a 6' varsity athlete. An ounce doesn't mean much to him. I'm a
FOG. An ounce means a lot.
This is why different choices are best for different people.
For me, I'm taking the Micropore Rainsuit to DoubleH this summer.

My son will take a nylon rainsuit.
