Far from trying to change your mind, Scott, I wholeheartedly agree. With 2 nephews currently in harms way (including one in Naval Air) I find this news most disgusting.
When my crew visited that site in '06, we spent several minutes viewing the wreckage, and my co-advisor (a Coast Guard veteren) pointed out to our guys that the flyers that died there weren't a whole lot older than they were, bearing in mind that in 1942 the average age of a soldier was 20-22. That got their attention. We had a very quiet hike down the trail to Beaubien after that.
Perhaps this is something that should be mentioned at the Advisors meeting on Day 1.

Subject: [philmont] Please Stop
At the risk of poo-pooing on some crews' favorite activity when hiking Trail Peak, I would like to say - Please Stop. Two crews from my area reported the smell of urine near the wing of the crashed B-24 Liberator was very evident.
It is my opinion that taking a pee off the wing of that airplane is the highest disrespect (next to another bodily function) that a Scout can give those men that died in service to the United State. Scouters that allow their crews to participate in such a foul act are just as guilty as the actual whizzers.
If anyone feels compelled to correct my over-the-top opinion on this issue, please don't bother. You will not change my mind.
Have a great time at the ranch this summer and please don't piss off the wing,
Scott Calkins
