All the commentary about being respectful on Trial Peak is on the money. One question, however... How did this thread get started? Maybe I missed a post about a specific crew being disrespectful (i.e. peeing off the wing) or something similar.

It's been 5 years since I was there...but I remember a small memorial to a Philhiker that had died at Philmont...and his brother and Dad spread his ashes at Trail Peak.....
I can't imagine that with the number of the rangers coming from Service Academies, that a memorial plaque can't be place and a reminder of reverence at Trail Peak be instilled by the rangers in the 2 days of checkout for those crews that has TP on there trek.

I fully agree and support all that has been said about this site and the respect it deserves.
An overriding question I have is, where is the adult leadership in all of this?
If thay don't stand-up for this, what do they stand for?
Also, it would be good if Philmont placed more emphasis on the respect due the site.

Photos of the memorials for the wreck on trail peak are in PhilSearch ... Program Features then select Trail Peak. They include one by Mic-O-Say.
The desecration of the TP wreckage is one reason why the 1980's wreck in the north country is not on any ranch maps today. It too has a fitting memorial to those that were killed but enjoys anonymity. A hard lesson learned. It never ceases to amaze me that Scouters tolerate such bad behavior.

The connection to Scouting is phenominal and personally I think it is a disgrace that a memorial to the crew is simply not there. This would put it into the proper perspective.
Maybe it can still get done. After all it took a full twenty years for the memorial above the U S S Arrizona to be built and fifty years for a WWII memorial to be built.

We went to the site on our AA trip in 2006. There is a memorial. No, not a massive statue as that would really be out of place. What we found was a very well done plaque. In addition were several notes, ribbons and mementos from servicemen both past and involved in our current challenges.
I found the memorial along with it's current recent reminders to be very powerful. I don't think I would change a thing.
Over time the wreckage has become more and more reclaimed by the elements and I suspect it will not be long before the remaining wreckage is not easily identifiable.
As for those who would deface the area, have them escorted from the Ranch and make sure their parents and local council's know why they are coming home. Problem will stop without much delay.
Just one opinion on the situation.
