I tried Red Ledge on our last trek. They did nothing to keep water out, it
was like wearing a non-water resistent item. Someone told me they only felt
wet due to the nature of how they work but actually keep you dry, I tried
them at home afterwards standing under the sprinklers, then took them off to
find myself soaked, jjust as I had during the trek.
I had made the mistake of buying three other sets (my son and I, then
replacement for each) and all four have the same result. They were bought
from three different sources too, one set from Tooth of time when we got
there and found the one we brought not working.
Agree on the inexpensive rain pants. Never put mine on, even the two days
when the rain didn't stop (just as well since they were red ledge, see
above).
Disagree with John on Frogg Toggs. I have them, decided, on recommendations
here, not to use them and got the red ledge. Two youth from our crew used
frogg toggs and stayed dry. I've used mine MANY times and not had any
problem with the "like toilet paper." They feel flimsy and like paper, but
they are just as durable was any other I've worn or seen used.
Disagree with John (and conventional wisdom) on poncho. Works fine WITH
GAITERs. Only advantage the rain suit has is it gives you a pair of long
pants that leave you not needing another pair to carry.

2. Buy inexpensive rain pants. Forget about "breathability", etc. You
clearly need a pair, and in extreme conditions they will be invaluable, but
the likelihood that you will keep them on very much during your trek is very
slight. Mine never came out of my pack during our 07 trek.

And somebody suggested Frogg Toggs.
Well, they are sort of like toilet paper, good for one use then you
throw them away.
