I took Stearn's rainsuit last July to Philmont and barely used it! One father/son team on our trek wore
Froggtoggs for maybe 3-4 times and did not rip them.
After receiving a gift card for Christmas, I went to Academy to investigate FroggToggs.
Supposedly these rainsuits are made out of Tyvek the moisture barrier being used in building houses lately.
At Academy they had 3 different types of this companies rain suits
1) $20 white/grey in a plastic bag and thin as toilet paper (I believe that this is the original suit)
2) $40 DriDucks (jacket and pants) in 4 different colors on hangers and a much thicker and stiffer
material than the lower end ones.
3) $60 BullFroggs on hangers and only in dark olive drab and made of very thick and nearly
bulletproof.
I believe the company has heard the fragility complaint and has addressed it quite well.
as John has said Texas is in rainy season. I have purchased some driducks and have worn them
in rainy and 40 degree weather and they have kept me warm and dry...
My experience with goretex in the '80's is that goertex keeps the cold water out but does not
let the perspiration out and so you are warm and wet. Perhaps goretex has improved in 20 years
but I do not KNOW that.
By the Way, Frogtoggs does make ponchos ---

Here's another vote for Marmot's Precip rain gear. I bought a set in 2001, and never regretted it. They've been to Philmont 4 times, and kept me dry on numerous shakedowns, personal backpacking expeditions, and high school and college soccer games. Granted, I take good care of my gear, but this stuff shows no signs of wear.
I don't hike while wearing the pants often. They're for warmth as much as anything.
