John:

With the on-again, off-again fire restrictions, one could never count on their being able to use their newly learned sklls.

Without the three day "ranger carry" the poundcake would not have its distinctive"trail hardened" quality.

I am a seasonal employee at Philmont Scout Ranch, and I know what I am talking about, but I DO NOT SPEAK FOR PHILMONT. Opinions expressed here are those of the writer, and not the permanent staff of Philmont Scout Ranch or the Boy Scouts of America.

Jim,

Lemme see, if a gazillion pound cakes were given out and only one Ranger cooked Ranger Cobbler, I guess it would be futile to teach Rangers how to cook Bannock wouldn't it?

Would it be possible to get "ranger cobbler pound cake" packaged and placed in vending machines at staffed camps thereby negating the need for the three day "ranger carry" of the gazillion pounds of cakes? This would lighten their load considerably.

Services puts out a gazillion pound cakes to Rangers each summer. You have your choice of cherry, blueberry or apple fruit topping. You also have your choice of vanilla, chocolate, and sometimes "pink" frosting. What more could you ask for?

Last summer, one Ranger did carry a dutch oven into the back country so he could make a Ranger Cobbler. I think he only did it once.
