[philmont] Requesting a trek for sister crews...

Greetings Randy,

You may or may not have a sister crew. A sister crew is the other crew on
the same itinerary that you mention. Unless you are really looking for
them, you might not even know who your sister crew is. But by day 3 or 4
you might notice that you see the same advisors at the evening coffee, or
the same folks at programs, they are probably your sister crew.

With 35 different itinerary selections and roughly 30 - 35 arriving crews
each day you may not have a sister crew. It depends on which itinerary your
crew selects. If it is one of the more popular itineraries you stand a
better chance; and if the crew leader's LIFE has (Itinerary Number) - B on
it, you do. In 1999 our other advisor had to leave the trail with an injury
and we were asked to shadow our sister crew for 2-deep leadership and other
aspects if needed. We didn't hike together or anything like that, but we
did camp in adjacent campsites and make contact from time-to-time. We got
to know them pretty well and it was a very positive experience.

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher

Dave,

I'm a novice here but I wouldn't count on getting your first choice, and two
crews both getting their first choices seems unlikely.

I would like to know more about what "sister crew" means. I have heard that
Philmont sends out two crews each day on the same itinerary. I don't know
how that could work. We didn't see the same guys all the time when we were
there.

In 2005 our troop sent two crews on separate treks. The treks did cross in
the middle, and it was fun to trade stories.

For 2008, the scouts want both crews to do the same trek, as sister crews.
If both crews get their first choice, there is no problem.

Is there a way to indicate on the trek selection card that if one crew gets
second choice (or third choice) that the other crew would also like the same
corresponding choice?

It's not the end of the world if they wind up on separate treks, though.

Thanks,
Dave Smith
