We have always hiked as sister crews. The boys choose that, but I confess I
guide them in that direction. We simple fill out identical itinerary cards,
mail them together and I write on each one that we want to sister with the
other.
Sister crews are valuable if an adult can't go or comes off the
trail.Onereason we always take 5 adults for two crews, had to swap
advisors more than
once. Sister crews allow "novice" adults to lead a crew and feel more
confident, if an experienced adviser is there for advice at night, and had
to do that. Sister crews allow the "senior" advisor's to help with a
difficult or sick scout, or crew problems, had to do that.
Sometimes we see our sister crew every night, actually seek them out for
games and fellowship. Other times we never see each other and prefer to be
with our own group, as if the sister crew was from another council. To each
their own.
I like sister crews for the above reasons, it also helps me convince the
scouts to divide into two "even" crews, not two crews of friends, or the
haves and have nots. If they know that they are going to do identical
experiences and have a chance to see their friends, they are more agreeable
to splitting up. I have "split" crews because of friction, size, age, to
break up the band of trouble makers, or because I want to hike with a
certain parent.Sister crews give that advantage to all. We also make a DVD
of our trek. We can do that with one camera, since we see the other guys
often
