Below is information that I recieved from Alps Mountaineering, I don't mean
for this to be an ad for them but I first found out about them 2 years ago
on this same list.
It took me until last month to decide to try their equipment. My backpack
was 6500 cc+ and while I could have carried anything I wanted and did, I
wanted something a little smaller and lighter. Alps gives a 45% discount to
Scouters, use the ScoutDirect web page to check those out. If you want the
current prices please contact Dennis directly.
I bought the Mystique 1.5 tent, Mossy Falls internal backpack ($82.49) and
small and medium compression bags, all of them are very good quality and the
prices are very good.
Dennis has been quite helpful, especially for the Scouting community.

Subject: ALPS & ScoutDirect 1/02 Update
Hello Scouts,
Well, the 2002 ALPS Mountaineering web site is updated and ready for your
viewing. If you haven't visited it lately, you may want to take a minute to
"check it out" (www.alpsmountaineering.com). We're pretty pleased with the
new format and think it is easier and quicker to navigate. There are still
a few cosmetic changes we want to make, especially on the home page, but
we'll make those in the next week or so. Quite a few of you were wanting to
see what our 2002 line looked like, so we focused on getting the product
pages ready ASAP.
I attached an updated copy of the Scout Program and a new 2002 price list.
Things that have been in our line for several years (Red Tail internals,
Silver Springs bags, etc.) are currently available in the warehouse. New
items, like a lot of the tents (Mystique, Meramac, Lake View), will be
available by the middle of February. Several of you have asked about these
3 new series of tents, so if you've decided what you want, let us know and
we'll get your order placed and your tents will be reserved.
Our Scout only site, www.ScoutDirect.com, is still up and running and is a
good place to look for sale items and information on our other Scout
programs.
Give us a call at 800-344-2577 if you have any questions. Happy camping!
Dennis

I hate to buy new packs just for Philmont, but if I will if necessary. Two questions - 1. Has anyone used rental packs from Philmont? If so, what kind of packs are available for rent, are pack covers also available for rental, what's the cost, and how do you arrange rental? 2. If I have to buy new packs, does anyone have a recommendation for an economy purchase at $100 or so per pack?
