Re: [Philmont]: Backpacking Stove

Just a couple of notes to add to this message string.

1) Although most people think Titanium is light, in reality it weighs more
than aluminum, however it is extremely stronger than aluminum, therefore
most utensils are made thinner with Titanium, but weigh the same as the
cheaper aluminum counterparts. Titanium also has very poor heat transfer
(heats does not spread throughout the entire pot) and can cause food to
burn. I prefer to spend less money on the more efficient aluminum pots.

2) To get any stove to simmer you should reduce the pressure in the fuel
bottle. Almost all stoves do not have a simmer setting. The problem is you
have to watch the flame and pump it once or twice to maintain the low
pressure.

3) Personal preference is to have a stove where the fuel bottle and the
burner are separate (burner is not on top the fuel source). It is easier to
pump and control the burner when pots are on, and they are more stable.
Also you can use the wind screen when you need it. Yes, my personal stove
is an MSR. The troops are MSR and Apex II.

4) Just like Signe, I really like the newer ultralite stoves and MAX fuels
where you crush the canister when your done. But I look at those as a more
personal item then something I trust the boys with. Also there are some set
backs when dealing with sub 0 degree weather. That is all to often here. I
was happily surprised to here that Philmont has started selling the fuel.

5) As far as alcohol stoves, nice and light, but not meant for a crew, uses
denatured alcohol (not rubbing alcohol) which is not readily found in all
places. But here is another site for ideas on how to build one:
http://www.fallingwater.com/pct2000/gear/kissstove.asp Look at the Pepsi
Can stove. It's based on several designs and works for me.
