I took Coop's gear advice. We got the bear bags, rope, polarpure, one pot
and that was about it. We did check out one tent for two boys who decided
that was the way to go.

It worked fine. My tarp was prerigged and we knew how everything worked.

Most importantly, every boy knew how the gear would fit in or be tied to
their pack. Our one challenge was getting the 8 qt pot in some of the
internal frame packs.

Both approaches have their merits, I would never second guess another's
approach on this issue.

I make it up to the crew. Bring your own, but it, or use Philmont's and
adjust.

Definitely get Coop's advisor's guide. It is well worth it. I don't agree
100% with some of his ideas, such as bring your own equipment - in 4 treks
I've done, we've always used the things that Philmont offers & I've never
had a problem or been sorry - put the wear & tear on their gear & not your
own IMO. But Coop's guide is full of great stuff & I highly recommend!
