IMHO (and like many things related to equipment others will differ) I'm
not sure that camera selection is that critical of an equipment
selection other than your crew should have at least two, you should be
familiar with it and they should be constantly available. A Philmont
trek involves a lot of "photo opportunities" of the snapshot variety and
some nice scenery shots etc. but does not really lend itself to a lot of
"photography". There really isn't time. Many photo processors can put
your pics on a diskette or CD so having a digital camera isn't that
necessary either.
Our crew took two Pentax point-and-shoot, auto flash, zoom cameras (both
used the same battery so we only carried one spare) and about 16 rolls
of 36 exposure film (double ziploc bag - bear bag every night). Doing
it again, I would add one disposable panoramic camera for things like
the top of Mt. Phillips, Tooth of Time etc. The two of us took pictures
for the whole crew, or let others take pictures as desired. When we got
home we made a complete set of all of the pictures for each crew
member. That way if Johnny had a picture of Fred that he didn't want,
he could trade Fred for a picture of Johnny. But we didn't have twelve
people all taking the same picture of the same thing, and by having two
picture takers, both of us got in at least some of the pictures.
But having the camera available is important. Many of the best shots
are the ones where there would not have been time to dig the camera out
of a pack to take the picture. This also means that you have to have
some way to protect the camera from the elements too.
That's my $0.02
