[Philmont]: Gear and Cooking

I am seeing several posts about gear and bag cooking.

Gear- I strongly recommend you use your own gear if you are a backpacking
Troop. In 97 we used the Philmont gear- it was good, but heavy; we weren't
used to it, etc. In 01' we used our own and it was great. Everyone was
used to the tents, anti-bear bags, paracord instead of 4 lbs of rope, 4
quart pots, not the 8 quart, etc. By using our own gear we carried less
than 4 lbs each of crew gear. Last thing, we use Nalgene Cantenes (96oz
collapsable) for our extra water and everyone had one in addition to their
normal water supply. On the days we were hitting dry camps (Comanche Peak
for example) everyone hiked heavy carrying their personal water and the
extra 96ozs. The other nice thing about these is they don't take any space
when you're not using them and they only weigh a couple of ounzes.

Bag Cooking- We have used the backpacker grates for almost 10 years and
think bag cooking is the only way to go. At Philmont we used their food but
cooked it in the roaster bags- the advantage is there is no cleanup so you
save time and alot of water which means we saved more time not having to
pump more water.

If any of you have questions about getting ready for Philmont we are here to
help.
