My crew did Trek 30 several years ago (when it was designated Treck 26).
We followed the same plan Coop describes (taking in the program at Miranda
after setting up camp at Ewell's Park, having dinner for lunch at Visto
Grande and taking in the rock climbing program and shower at Cimaroncito
while passing through).
Unlike Coop, though, we enjoyed our stay at Red Hills. Like him, we had
difficulty finding the trail over the saddle on over to Black Mountain.
But our crew was somewhat crazy. After not finding that trail, they
decided to hike down to Phillips Junction, where we rested and snacked
before heading up to Black Mountain. We lunched there, then decided that
since the were storms coming in to take the North Fork Urraca trail rather
than risk getting caught half way up Black Mountain as the thumderstroms
come in. Coop isn't kidding when he says there is plenty of water
available on that trail. It is easy to follow, and crosses the creek
about 48 times (no joking) before the trail to Shaefers Pass shoots off to
the left. We made the last 42 crossings in a steam rain and watched as
that lovely creek rose and rose, covering all of the rocks normally used as
fords. Despite the water, that day was easily one of the most memorable of
my trip to Philmont. I can't think of doing that Trek any other way but to
take the North Fork out of Black Mountain Camp.
Anyway, I earlier said that my crew was a bit crazy. We had counted up our
mileage, including side hikes, etc., and decided to take the long way to
Black Mountain (hence the route through PJ) so that they could get the
total mileage over 100 miles. We estimate that we covered between 103 and
105 from the time we left the bus at Ponil Turnaround and we arrived at
Base Camp.
