As a Ranger in 1998, I took out an Explorer crew from Illinois (just south of the
St. Louis area). The two lead advisors were husband and wife - he was in his
early seventies and I believe she was 68. Between treks and the Training Center,
that marked their 24th summer at Philmont (they alternated every summer). I saw
them again while working there in 2000 - they told me that that was going to be
their last trek (but I wouldn't be surprised to see them there next summer!).
Apparently they worked really hard at getting underprivileged youth out to
experience Philmont. They were a great inspiration to all, myself included.
