I used a small 35mm camera and took several rolls of
film, i averaged a roll and a half per day, but easily
could've taken more! If i go back i am going to take a
Digital camera. They get pricy, but they now have
quality as good as or even better than 35mm for under
$500, that's allot if your wanting something just for
philmont, but if you are looking into digital cameras
anyways. The Kodak DX3900 is pretty nice and so are
the Sony DSC series. The compact Flash cards are
wonderful! So are the memory Sticks. Any Store should
be able to show you the quality of an actual picture
from a camera. Kodak has a service at ofoto.com where
you can actually order prints, that's not the only one
either. The pics are remakeably good to! If you have a
computer, then you won't have to scan them in either.
The dis-advantages are cost, and you do not have a
negative. The advantages are, you dont have to scan
them in, you can pick and choose what pics you want to
print, quality meets and exceeds 35mm on most middle
range cameras, LESS WEIGHT on most new mid-range
cameras. A single Large memory card will hold more
pictures than what you can take, and allot more than
if you would have used film. Batteries could be an
issue, but you can buy some prior to your trip and
have philmont give them to you as you pick up your
food!(i think) if they can't they are still lighter
than film.
If you are buying a camera i would seriously check out
the digital cameras and decide for yourself if it
would be right for you or if you prefer to stay with
35mm.
